​​​I was told by a friend years ago that in order to receive a medal in the Japanese military a soldier had to die twice.  While that is a little bit of an exaggeration it was difficult.  The Japanese government did not issue medals as many medals as the Germans, British, or Americans there are a number of interesting awards.
